Type of Soles Type of Heels
Goodyear Welt Sewn Sole (W)
Before soling, a stout strip of welting leather is stitched to the upper and inner sole. The sole is then stitched to this welting strip with heavy, wax dipped thread. Ideal for dress boots.
Screwed Sole (S)
Soft brass, screw threaded wire is spun at high speed in a machine that 'screws' the sole to the leather inner sole of the boot. Being a soft metal, brass wears down with the leather.
Longhorn Plain Sole (D)
Our 7mm stout rubber composition untreaded, non-slip sole. Makes for extra durability and oil-resistance.
Longhorn Welted Sole (L)
9mm stout rubber composition sole has a significant tread moulded into it. Available in brown or gristle. Oil-resistance. Ideal for casual and work wear.
Mallee Sole (V)
Rubber/nitrile unit sole.
Longhorn Screwed Sole (E)
9mm stout rubber composition sole has a significant tread moulded into it. Stitched, screwed and glued. Extra durability and oil-resistance.
Flinders Sole (N)
Dimpled welted sole. Combination rubber.

Types of Leather
At R.M. Williams we select only the best leather for our boots. If the quality required is not available, we will not make the boots until it is. To help with your orders, we have listed some of the terms used in describing our boots.
Willow (W) - Chrome tanned oxide. Taken from a mature animal, it is a heavier leather that does not require lining.
Oiled Kip (G) - Heavy chrome tanned hide from a large beast. During tanning, the leather is impregnated with special oils to make it water-resistant. Sometimes know as 'red' kip.
Yearling (Y) - A fine grained leather from cattle grown through a calf stage, but not yet mature. Most suitable for dress or lighter work boots.
Desert Kip (D) - A full chrome tanned bovine leather suede, finished on the flesh side. Normally comes unlined.
Oily Iron (I) - This is a heavy chrome tanned, black pigmented leather. As with oiled kip, the leather is impregnated >with water-resisting oils, but it has a slightly 'drier' feel.
Kangaroo (K) - The strongest leather for its weight in the world. Extremely fine grained, it is as light as a feather and fits the foot like a glove. Chrome tanned, it polishes up to make a winning dress or riding boot.
Ostrich (X) - With a distinctive quill pattern, lightweight soft feel and high strength, ostrich leather is one of the most striking and desirable leathers available.
Veal (C) - Hide from a young beast. Chrome tanned, to become a superb dress leather which moulds to your feet.
Suede (S) - Cowhide taken from a mature beast, which is split to a lighter weight and suede finished.
Scout (V) - A stout, matt-finished cowhide leather, used in the uppers. Its special water repellent chemicals are permanently bonded to each fibre of the hide.
